My Tacoma Construction Company Wilder Outdoor Spaces

For those of you who follow me on Facebook, Instagram or our YouTube channel you probably already know that in addition to photography and videography, I am the owner of a separate construction company in Tacoma, WA (where Laura and myself are based) called Wilder Outdoor Spaces. For those of you who just follow this blog though, I realized I don’t think I have ever mentioned Wilder on here, and since it’s a pretty big part of allowing us to travel the world with our cameras I figured I should share a little about it with y’all.

We’ve been in Maui for a couple months now shooting a new batch of Adidas gear. We’ve taken this stuff everywhere from climbing waterfalls to hiking the epic Waihee Ridge Trail and even up to the top of the Haleakala Volcano. Check out some of our favorite shots below!

Watch: The Detourist Guide To Travel - Maui | Episode 1

So after years of traveling to different parts of the world I’ve finally began creating the video series I’ve been envisioning since our very first trip abroad. To be honest, I’m not sure why it’s taken so long to put together a show like this, but all excuses aside, I’m pretty pumped that it’s all coming together finally. Now it’s worth mentioning, in case you forgot the name of this site, that I’m an amateur. This is a work in progress, and I’m no cinematographer, but I’m giving a solid shot anyways and I hope you can ride with me as I figure it all out. Gear Review: The North Face Basecamp Duffel Bag

Being that traveling is kinda my thing, bags are an absolute necessity. They have become a piece of my life that I really can’t live without. Since nearly every trip I go on is to a new place that I haven’t been to before, I usually find myself having different wants and needs from the luggage that I am going to bring with me. Over the last few years I have grown to love the process of preparing for a trip. It involves researching the place we’re going, deciding how we’re going to get around, finding the activities we might be interested in doing and then planning out the gear we’re going to want to bring accordingly. Once we get all that info then I begin investigating the bags best suited for the trip, comparing them with their competition and then finally trying them out on a trip.

Every year before we take our annual multi month trip away from the great pacific northwest I snag myself a new pair of super comfortable shoes to wear while we’re away. For the last few years my go to shoes have been Nike’s with an Airmax or Lunarlon sole. From what I had experienced they were the most comfortable footbeds in the game. This last winter trip (Jan - Apr 2018) to Spain though I decided to switch it up and try out some Adidas Boosts and see if the hype was real. After far too much google research, youtube reviews and ridiculous side by side comparisons, I landed on the Adidas Pureboost.

Shoots: Rains in Spain

For the first 3 months of 2018, Laura and I lived in southern Spain. While were there we did several shoots for the Danish clothing company Rains. While rain is not the first thing people think of when they think of the Costa Del Sol, we found ourselves in a heavy downpour and took advantage of the picture perfect weather for a street shoot in Malaga. Gear Review: Alps Mountaineering Solitude 24 Pack

Before our 3 month trip to Spain in Early 2018, Laura and I were sent 2 Alps Mountaineering Solitude 24 Packs. Our plan was to bring only carryon baggage for the whole trip, so we would each bring a regular 22” carryon size suitcase and then we would use these Alps packs as our main day packs for all of our adventures throughout the trip. After 3 months of heavy use abroad, and then regular action back home here in the NW after that, I figured it’s time to check in with a gear review.

Travel Tips: How To Get Free RV & Camper Van Rentals

Sometimes I feel like a broken record on blog posts because so many of my stories start the same way. It’s always begins with me and my trusty computer, surfing the internet looking for interesting ways to travel, usually on a budget. My RV story kicks off that very same way. There I was Google Chrome’ing it up looking for a cheap way to get a rental vehicle. Laura and I wanted to get something we could sleep in so we would be able to go on a road trip for extra cheap by bypassing the need to get hotels or Airbnbs. Somewhere along the way I landed on a random website and right there buried in the middle of this travel hacking blog I discovered the world of RV Relocations.

Destinations: Sedona, Arizona

In December 2017 we flew down to Arizona on some spare airline miles we had. Our plan was to fly into Phoenix, pick up our rental van, remove the seats, and turn the rented Chrysler Pacifica into a makeshift DIY camper van. The first step on our mission was to head to the local craft store to pickup some black construction paper and tape, with which we fastened up some DIY blackout window shades. Then we setup our backpacking air mattresses, sleeping bags, and our awesome Luminoodle light rope. Since we only brought carry on bags on the plane we couldn’t fit everything we needed to convert the van, so the last step was to stop and get some pillows, a little cooler, ice and some food. Once we finished all the prep work setting up and converting the rental van we headed north out of Phoenix. We weren’t sure where we were going to go, but after a little google searching en route we decided Sedona looked pretty cool and headed that direction.

Travel Tips: Checking A Bag VS Carry-On

Wherever, whenever and however we travel, we always bring a bag. One of the main things people worry about when planning a vacation is what to put in their bag, and although I could write 10 different posts about that, it's not what I'm worried about today. What I'm focused on isn't the items inside the bag, but the bag itself!

On January 1, 2017 Laura and I hopped onto an Asiana Airlines flight from Seattle to Hanoi, a large city in north Vietnam. We bought a 150cc SYM motorbike, strapped our two 70L North Face Base Camp Duffels to the back and rode south. Our goal was to spend as much time as we wanted in each city, and slowly make our way through the entire country. Now as of yet, I haven't written a single word about the trip. I'm still not sure that I'm ready to cover the entire 66 day adventure in full detail yet, but I figured I should write something about my favorite place on the entire trip.

Travel Tips: Free Airline Upgrades

The theme of this blog is that I'm not an expert. There's a lot of stuff I like to do and lot of stuff I'm interested in, but in general I'm amateur at best with most things I do. With that said it's still worth noting that I am by no means am I a frequent flyer. There's plenty of business travelers who would laugh at how infrequently I fly by their standards. What is probably true though, is that I fly more than the average Joe and I have picked up my fair share of tricks of the trade.
