The Professional Amateur Defined

First and foremost, to be a professional means that a person makes their income from a specific activity or skill. It also typically means that they are pretty damn good at their craft compared to a person with little to no experience. To be a pro requires constant dedication, grit and stubborn determination to hone their skill or craft to a level beyond what the average person can fathom. It means that they have been through the fire, that they have failed over and over again, year after year, until they finally master the ability to do whatever it is that they do, competently and reliably. It also means in essence that they are no longer an amateur, since they are getting paid to do it. So what does it mean to be a professional amateur then? How can we both be professional and amateur at the same time? It would seem that these are conflicting and contradictory ideas, but we think there is a different way to look at it.

Travel Tips: Travel Free With Airline Miles & Credit Card Reward Points

Several years ago I was browsing the wonderful world wide web searching for creative ways to travel for cheap when I stumbled upon a random blog and suddenly found myself winding deep down into a vortex of travel hacking sites. Now if you’re not familiar with travel hacking, don’t trip, I will break it down for you a bit below.

Watch: GX1000's Roll Up Video

Skateboarding can be a strange and confusing thing to watch for the uninitiated sometimes. If you don’t follow skating and happen to know what is going in any given flip-in-flip-out-ledge-trick, than even the most difficult tricks will most definitely be lost on the viewer. And sure, sometimes a few large handrail grinds can keep the attention of some fair-weather fans of skating for a bit, but even that is lost on most. I give you all of this to say, the GX1000 video is not your typical skate video. It’s 35 + minutes of butt puckering, anxiety inducing, life-risking, pure insane skateboarding that will keep the attention of even the most uninterested skateboard video viewers. Gather your friends and press play and watch a long list of un-named skateboarders do some of the wildest shit you’ll ever see!

Podcasts: The Nine Club With Chris Roberts

If you’re a frequent visitor of the site you probably know that skateboarding is a huge part of my life. I’ve skateboarded since I was 12 year old and I’m 31 currently. That’s just about 20 years of pushing around on a kids toy, but who’s counting! At this point, I’ve skateboarded for longer than I’ve done just about anything in my life, and that’s pretty damn cool if you ask me. Now that you have a little background on me, I can get into the Nine Club podcast.

Gear Review: Adidas Pureboost

Every year before we take our annual multi month trip away from the great pacific northwest I snag myself a new pair of super comfortable shoes to wear while we’re away. For the last few years my go to shoes have been Nike’s with an Airmax or Lunarlon sole. From what I had experienced they were the most comfortable footbeds in the game. This last winter trip (Jan - Apr 2018) to Spain though I decided to switch it up and try out some Adidas Boosts and see if the hype was real. After far too much google research, youtube reviews and ridiculous side by side comparisons, I landed on the Adidas Pureboost.

Gear Review: Patagonia Triolet Jacket

I’m going to be honest, for most of my life I had an embarrassingly poor choice in jackets for a native PNW dude. Skateboarding fashion dominated my style choices. I never cared about quality, fabrics or lifespan. I pretty much only cared about affordability and look. Several years ago though, that changed. I’m not sure if it’s being outdoors more, being exposed to more ideas or just getting older, but I began to pay more attention to things that mattered in a jacket like how long it lasted, what is was made for and how it was made. I’ve had the opportunity over the last few years to try out many different brands like Arcteryx, Craghoppers, Marmot and more. The reason I give you all of that background is to say that one of the best all around hard shell jackets I’ve found is the Patagonia Triolet Jacket.

Shoots: Rains in Spain

For the first 3 months of 2018, Laura and I lived in southern Spain. While were there we did several shoots for the Danish clothing company Rains. While rain is not the first thing people think of when they think of the Costa Del Sol, we found ourselves in a heavy downpour and took advantage of the picture perfect weather for a street shoot in Malaga. Check out a few of my favorite images below.

Gear Review: Adidas Fast X High GTX Hiking Boots

Over the last years I’ve had MANY pairs of hiking boots from Salomon to Merrel to Zamberlan. When I started using the Adidas Fast X High GTX I already had a pretty new pair of burly, heavy backpacking boots, but I found myself not wanting to wear them on day hikes or adventure photography trips due to their weight and bulkiness. So a little over a year ago I started testing the Adidas Fast X High GTX Hiking Boots and I really fell love!

Gear Review: Alps Mountaineering Solitude 24 Pack

Before our 3 month trip to Spain in Early 2018, Laura and I were sent 2 Alps Mountaineering Solitude 24 Packs. Our plan was to bring only carryon baggage for the whole trip, so we would each bring a regular 22” carryon size suitcase and then we would use these Alps packs as our main day packs for all of our adventures throughout the trip. After 3 months of heavy use abroad, and then regular action back home here in the NW after that, I figured it’s time to check in with a gear review.

Gear Review: Rhone Basecamp Jogger Pant

The Rhone Basecamp Jogger is a simple and stylish sweat pant. These things are so damn comfortable they make putting on my normal pants pretty difficult. Unlike many other big name joggers I’ve tried out, these things aren’t too long, too tight or too baggy. I’m 5’ 10” and the medium is perfect fit for me. The fabric is soft and stretchy enough to feel great on the skin, but thick enough to feel durable. The stretchiness allows for free movement when out hiking, at the gym or even doing yoga (see below). To boil it all down, the Basecamp Jogger is a well built, comfortable pant from the the ankle cuff to the waist band. They're available in 3 colors and come in all sizes.

I’m a huge fan of merino wool. It’s no secret anymore that it’s one of the best materials for outdoor enthusiasts like myself. Ever since I started shooting images for Minus 33 in 2016 I’ve been able to try out some of the best merino wool gear on the planet, and I’ve never taken this privilege for granted. This fall I was able to be apart of shooting some photographs for Minus 33’s upcoming 2019-2020 catalog. Laura and I went out into the woods for a few days and had blast shooting together. We came back with a ton of awesome images for Minus 33. You can order a catalog for yourself at Minus33.com to see everything we contributed and you can check out a few of my favorite photos from the shoot below.

Gear Review: Sony E 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens

Okay, lets start with something you might not know. The Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4G OSS is my most utilized lens, probably ever. It’s on my camera 80% of the time when I’m out shooting. Through using it regularly for the last several years, I’ve discovered it’s not the most popular lens, and I can understand why people might be afraid to try it out being that isn’t exactly cheap or extensively praised. Hopefully my review will help a few to give it try though.

Gear Review: SOG Seraphim 35 Backpack

I’ve had the pleasure of trying out several SOG backpacks over the last few years from the biggest to the smallest versions, so I was stoked to try out the SOG Seraphim 35. This thing is *packed* (wink) with a long list of features. In fact, it has far too many features to list off every one but I’ll give you a few of the real world things I like most about it. First off, it’s a super clean looking pack, and all black is always a good move for a color way. I also really enjoy the ability to strap my gear to the outside of the pack. There’s several ways to attach stuff either with the pack’s shock cord tie downs, the Hypalon MOLLE field, or the endless loops and lash points. Also, the fold down panel on the outside of the pack has the ability to carry long items like an axe, fishing rod, rifle or if you’re like me, a tripod!

Travel Tips: How To Get Free RV & Camper Van Rentals

Sometimes I feel like a broken record on blog posts because so many of my stories start the same way. It’s always begins with me and my trusty computer, surfing the internet looking for interesting ways to travel, usually on a budget. My RV story kicks off that very same way. There I was Google Chrome’ing it up looking for a cheap way to get a rental vehicle. Laura and I wanted to get something we could sleep in so we would be able to go on a road trip for extra cheap by bypassing the need to get hotels or Airbnbs. Somewhere along the way I landed on a random website and right there buried in the middle of this travel hacking blog I discovered the world of RV Relocations.

Destinations: Sedona, Arizona

In December 2017 we flew down to Arizona on some spare airline miles we had. Our plan was to fly into Phoenix, pick up our rental van, remove the seats, and turn the rented Chrysler Pacifica into a makeshift DIY camper van. The first step on our mission was to head to the local craft store to pickup some black construction paper and tape, with which we fastened up some DIY blackout window shades. Then we setup our backpacking air mattresses, sleeping bags, and our awesome Luminoodle light rope. Since we only brought carry on bags on the plane we couldn’t fit everything we needed to convert the van, so the last step was to stop and get some pillows, a little cooler, ice and some food. Once we finished all the prep work setting up and converting the rental van we headed north out of Phoenix. We weren’t sure where we were going to go, but after a little google searching en route we decided Sedona looked pretty cool and headed that direction.

Shoots: Violet & Alek's Engagement

I recently did an awesome engagement session out in Vaughn, Washington with my friends Violet & Alek. The shoot was located at a beautiful waterfront home surround by forest and fields on one side, and beautiful Vaughn bay on the other side. Being December in the PNW we had to watch the weather forecast to find a good window of clear skies. Luckily, the weather gods blessed us with a gorgeous Saturday afternoon and clear blue skies. Check out a few of my favorite images from the shoot below!

Gear Review: Coast TX399 Knife

The Coast TX399 Knife is a tactical folding knife. I love the way it looks and feels. It's long and sleek with an all black finish. It's built extremely well for the price, with durable construction and a lightweight design. The TX399 is part of Coast's Spec-Ops line, geared towards tactical and industrial use as a heavy duty cutting tool. It has a 4" blade made from super strong 9Cr18Mov stainless steel. The exterior has a glass bead finish with an all black titanium nitride coating. I really like the handle on this thing. It's textured stylishly and made from a nylon/fiberglass composite that keeps its weight down. The pocket clip on the knife can be switched for right or left handed carry, and it sits deep in the pocket for an easy carry. Overall, the Coast TX399 is badass knife for the price. It's well built, good looking and easy on the budget.

Gear Review: Alps Mountaineering Red Tail 65 Pack

ALPS Mountaineering is a company that I've only recently begun to work with, but they have been in the game for a long time. They're a family run company, which I really love. They were started back in '93 by a guy named Dennis Brune, who had previously been the head of the outdoor brand Kelty. Since their inception ALPS has grown to produce many camping and hiking products including tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, air mattresses, and camping furniture like chairs, cots, and tables. The ALPS product I'll be reviewing today is the Red Tail 65L Pack.

Watch: Krooked LSD: Let's Skate Dude

I hear it over and over again, full length skate videos are dead. It seems like with every big skate video that drops, everyone exclaims that it's the last skate video ever... but then another one drops? So are they dead or nah? I'd have to say not quite yet. While big skate videos impact and lasting power has definitely decreased over the last 10 years, the new Krooked video is perfect proof that full length videos are still alive and shredding.
